The Olive Oil sector of the Val d'Agri: Competitiveness and Sustainable Development

The project which is aimed at defining strategies for the strengthening of productive chains of the Val d'Agri gets to the heart of its matter.  With a series of cognitive and participatory actions on the territory, the office of INEA Basilicata  starts this project conducted and funded by the Operational Programme Val d'Agri Melandro Sauro Camastra. The work creates a strong correlation between the primary companies, that are involved in the processing and in the marketing of products.

There are three supply chains that are involved: the olive-oil production, spread throughout the Middle agricultural area with a large number of processing enterprises and some experiences of quality certification; the cereal sector with the presence of numerous processed products especially in the downstream area of the Pertusillo dam the supply chain of livestock for meat, particularly podolic beef, sheep and goats that affects the entire territory of the mountain.

These sectors have a strong importance from the point of view of environmental, landscape and soil protection. This project aims to overcome the limitations due to the pulverization of the companies and especially the reluctance to join and work in a logical network. Hence the need for action in the area to move from cognitive analysis to operational strategies shared with the real protagonists of the development of the territory.

Local businesses of the primary sector and agribusiness are invited to attend, process and share common interests to seize the opportunities of financial support from local, regional, national and EU level. The model of supply chain thus becomes the central point, that can promote the integration of the businesses of the Operational Programme Val d'Agri and to encouragethe acquisition of innovative organizational models. Furthermore, this model increases the contractual power of farmers and allow a better distribution of the profitability of all players in the same sector.
