The territory of Lazio has no homogeneous physical characteristics and is characterized by the presence of hilly regions, while the plains are found mostly near the coast. More generally, it can be asserted that the Lazio region is mostly hilly, since 54% of its territory is occupied by hilly areas, 26.1% by mountainous areas and only 20% by the plains. In 2007, the population increased by 1.2% over the previous year, exceeding the 5.5 billion inhabitants. The UAA represents 47.1% of the Region, in line with the national figure (46.7%), while in Central Italy this value is equal to 56.5%. The most representative crops are the permanent grassland (35.8%), the alternated meadows (25.4%), cereals (13.9%) and the olive tree (about 11%) which together occupy the 86.1% of agricultural land.
