Economic research on social capital has often asked why territories with similar physical, human and institutional capital show different economic performances. The hypothesis supported by the theorists of social capital is that the social factors of each territory (systems of cooperative relations and cognitivenormative values) influence the economic variables, thus explaining the diversities in economic outcomes.
